How do you grade Art?
It isn’t easy to determine a specific grade for elementary level artwork. I have developed a method to make sure that each child is graded in a fair manner that allows them to enjoy a high level of success, regardless of their artistic ability.
Each project will be graded with the following criteria:
Vocabulary/Concepts
-Student demonstrated an understanding of the objectives of the lesson
-Student demonstrated knowledge of the art vocabulary
For example, a lesson focusing on overlapping would include the student’s demonstration of overlapping in their project.
Use of Materials
-Student was able to control the materials used for the project
-Student used the materials in a way that was appropriate for their grade level.
Craftsmanship
-Name is on paper
-Project is neatly done, with no drippy glue or paint, or scribbles. Mistakes have been clearly erased.
-Student worked to THEIR ability level
I also expect students will
-Follow directions for set up and clean up
-Be alert during class discussions
-Be willing to talk about their artwork, the work of artists whose work we are studying and about the concepts surrounding our lesson.
Behavior-
Each student has a number assigned to their seat, with a corresponding pocket on the behavior board. If and when their behavior needs adjustment, I will “pull” one of the crayons from their envelope.
E-No crayons lost, art behavior is right on target.
S-A few crayons lost, may have needed a reminder here or there.
N- Consistent loss of crayons. Art behavior is not what it ought to be.
